Preparing for the Inevitable Takeover of Telematics

Preparing for the Inevitable Takeover of Telematics

We all need a helping hand from time to time. If you’ve ever conquered a long journey along a motorway for hours on end, it’s inevitable that you would use the sat-nav in your vehicle to complete your journey in an unfamiliar town or city. Sometimes, we underestimate the importance of technology-assisted devices in our vehicles, although this is set to change in future.

We live in a world where we have access to devices which make our lives that little bit easier, for example the simple black box can keep premium costs down, improve driver behaviour and teach life lessons to those new to the driving world. It is expected that before long, every serious crash will result in police forces requesting vital telematics data, which will be used to assess the incident and allocate blame accordingly.

Over the past twelve months, telematics has had a strong effect on pricing of vehicles. Under-25s’ annual policies have fallen by 11.9% as they benefit from the exponential growth of telematics in vehicles. Younger drivers are paying an average premium of £1,635 a year, compared with £413 for over-50s and £629 for motorists aged between 25 and 49, although there is still a large room for improvement in this sector.

As the rise of telematics is becoming more apparent today, the UK government have granted the police funding to survey dashcam data from the general public. In future, this will encourage motor insurers to become more flexible with sharing accident data with specialist analytics companies, eventually streamlining this process for the motor industry.

To support these schemes, our own telematics system, MarshallMatics is crucial for highlighting and managing driver habits and changing road conditions. Whether you are a large, multi-national organisation or a small, local company, MarshallMatics has made it easy to take advantage of next generation telematics and assess crucial business intelligence quickly. This is assessed through Driver Score, Crash Detection, Vehicle Location and Incident Cam.
