Tesco to Supply Electric Vehicle Charging Points Across the Country

​We all love a trip to the supermarket. Especially in the run up to the festive holidays, it’s a time to stock up on Christmas dinner luxuries and last-minute presents. If you’re an owner of an electric vehicle (EV), as part of your company’s fleet, we’ve got some great news for you. As part of a newly-fledged partnership, Volkswagen (VW) and Tesco have combined to allow EV drivers the chance to charge their car at their local supermarket.

This new scheme will introduce more than 2,400 EV charging stations across 600 Tesco stores nationwide by 2022. The best news of all, this will be free! Tesco want to offer their loyal customers in communities an alternative method of transportation for the weekly shop. The supermarket chain is playing its part in supporting the transition to a low-carbon, environmentally-friendly UK.

Customers will be able to charge their vehicles through a standard 7kW fast charger for free. For those who have a lot of miles under their belt, use of the rapid 50kW charger will incur a small cost, in line with the current market rate at that time. Alongside this fantastic scheme, Volkswagen’s input is to promote the goal of selling one million electric vehicles per year worldwide by 2025, in line with Tesco handling the reputation as being the UK’s largest fuel retailer.

As an additional boost for the rise of EVs, pub chain Marston had also announced a partnership with Engenie to install 400 rapid EV charging stations at its pubs across the nation. This scheme will encourage the removal of up to 4.8 tonnes of harmful chemicals polluting the air from UK roads, such as nitrogen oxide.
