Pothole Plague – Record Number Reported to Local Councils

For avid drivers, a smooth road when driving your vehicle is a perfect match made in heaven. Has your trip ever started with rolling down your windows, taking in the fresh air… then ending with you hitting a pothole and damaging your tyre? Across the country, potholes have become a bane, with a record number of these being reported by members of the public to local authorities, up by 44% year-on-year, according to the RAC. The main cause of these potholes are harsh winters and hot summers.

Authorities up and down the country, not including London, saw the highest rise in pothole reports between 2015 and 2017, with a 55% increase from 269,486 to 417,881. To tackle these ongoing issues, the government has recently given an incentive for local councils by giving them an extra £420million to decrease the overall number of potholes on UK roads.

The RAC’s long-term indicator showing the health of the UK’s roads, the Pothole Index has shown that motorists are now more than two and a half times more likely to have a pothole breakdown than they were twelve years ago. Over the last decade, the highest recorded index figure from the RAC was in the first quarter of 2010, where motorists were three and a half times more likely to breakdown as a result of hitting a pothole than they were in 2006.
