This year saw highest number of pothole-related breakdowns

In the summer of 2023, the RAC dealt with the highest number of pothole-related breakdowns in any third quarter since it began recording this data in 2006. The breakdown specialists rescued 5,978 drivers between July to September from damaged shock absorbers, broken suspension springs and distorted wheels, amid other damage. Worse still, this period was not the worst quarter of the year. January to March 2023 saw the highest number of callouts in any quarter since 2006 (14,827). This means that drivers are now almost twice as likely to break down on the road due... Read full article

Councils receive just two thirds of the funds needed for road repairs

The UK’s annual expenditure on local roads maintenance fell from £4 billion in 2006 to £2 billion in 2019. This is despite estimates from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) that say tackling potholes in the UK could cost £14 billion. The organisation also revealed that around 37,000 miles of road surface, representing 18 per cent of the local roads network, is in poor condition with less than five years of life left. The UK government increased the Potholes Fund for English road repairs by £200 million to £700 million for this... Read full article

AA callouts to pothole-damaged vehicles reach the highest level in five years

New data collected by the AA’s Pothole Tracker shows that its patrols attended 46,650 vehicles with pothole-inflicted damage in June 2023 – the highest level in five years. Earlier this year in the Spring Budget 2023, the UK government pledged £200m in funding for road surface repairs. Whilst this has allowed some progress to be made by local authorities in repairing potholes along roads in built-up areas, drivers are continuing to experience what the AA has labelled a ‘rural plague of potholes’ on roads with a lower priority for... One in five roads will be undriveable within the next 15 years

A new document by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA), the Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance (ALARM) survey, reports that one in five roads (37,000 miles) have so much road surface damage that they will be undriveable within five years. It has been estimated that about £14 billion is needed to repair all road surface damage England and Wales. This means that our roads have suffered an additional £2 billion in damage since last year’s estimate. There is now concern within the motoring industry that the government’s pledged £700... New pothole repair device could help to solve ‘Pothole Pandemic’

New pothole repair device could help to solve ‘Pothole Pandemic’

The British construction firm, JCB, has launched a new product called the Pothole Pro which can reduce repair time from hours to minutes, and claims to cost half the price. The Pothole Pro has three attachments which are used to cut, crop and clean. Apparently, no other equipment is required to repair a pothole, and the repairers will only need to add tar. Councils in Stoke-on-Trent and Coventry City have already used the product and praised its effectiveness. In this YouTube video, you can see a comparison between traditional pothole repair and the Pothole Pro.... Read full article

The RAC attended 10,123 pothole-related call outs in 2021

The RAC has just released its breakdown data for last year which shows that it attended 10,123 call outs for pothole-related damage in 2021.  Damage from such incidents included broken suspension springs, distorted wheels and damaged shock absorbers. The figure represents 1.5 per cent of all RAC callouts in 2021 and is an increase of 19 per cent compared with the number of pothole-related breakdowns attended in 2020 (8,524) and 10 per cent more than those attended in 2019 (9,198). It is now estimated that drivers are over 1.5 times more likely... Read full article

Industry bodies say the government missed a ‘golden opportunity’ for road repair during the pandemic

New figures from the Department for Transport reveal that 23 per cent of B and C roads in the UK, as well as small unclassified roads, were in need of repair in 2020 last year. A concerning percentage of minor and rural roads in Derbyshire, the west London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Bath & North East Somerset are in the ‘red’ category for road surface damage (68, 50 and 42 per cent respectively). In comparison, major A-roads and motorways managed by National Highways were found to be in better condition, with 7 per cent and 4 per cent... Read full article

Potholes of the UK

It’s enough to drive you potty. So I am now swerving my way along the Rye Road in Kent, trying to stop my wheels getting bent. Ducking and trying to avoid diving into yet another pot hole. These roads today really take their toll... Read full article
