If you could be a medal-winning champion in just one Olympic sport, which would it be? With the 2012 Games in full swing we’ve been pondering this question. It’s perhaps more applicable to individuals rather than companies – but unwittingly we recently found ourselves aligning Marshall Leasing with one particular long-standing Olympic sport.

The analogy might not be a complete one, but it was boxing that seemed the most appropriate comparison earlier this year when we ended up successfully punching above our weight within industry circles. In the world of professional boxing, your size tends to dictate the class of opponent you’re up against. But it doesn’t have to. True, it might be unusual to see a boxer opting to compete in a higher weight class, but the option is there. And a similar choice applies in business. Even a smaller, organically grown company has the chance to make a big impact.

We’ve found ourselves in a position to do just that following the appointment of our MD Peter Cakebread to Vice Chairman of respected industry body the British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association (BVRLA) – a position which will lead to him taking on the role of Chairman next May. This type of recognition is usually reserved for the figurehead of one of the industry’s heavy-weight organisations, so it’s been a particular honour for us that Peter was chosen.

Of course, we’re fortunate to have a great team driving us forward. We also have the support of the wider Marshall Group. But at the end of the day, we’re a smaller player who got in the ring, took our chance and came out on top. Here’s to many more successes in the future.
