Transport for London Announces 20MPH Speed Limits for Central London

Speed is a killer, especially in built up towns and cities across the UK. Across 2018, there were a reported 1,782 road deaths and 25,484 serious injuries reported to the police in the same timeframe. As more and more people are flocking to the capital in search of work, the probability of safety risks on the road dramatically increases. To combat these shocking statistics, Transport for London (TFL) has announced the introduction of a 20mph speed limit across 8.9km of road, with work beginning in late 2019.
This move has been identified as a key part of Sadiq Khan’s plans for ‘Vision Zero’, the ambition to eliminate death and serious injury from the London transport network. This will be supported with new 20mph signage and road markings as well as raised pedestrian crossings into seven locations with a high footfall. These key locations include Embankment, Tower Hill Tube stations and outside the Tate Britain. TfL is also recalibrating all speed cameras across central London, and looking to introduce mobile speed cameras which will ensure that drivers are complying with the new safer speed limit.
