2030 deadline for electrification: What you need to know

2030 deadline for electrification: What you need to know

We understand that you are likely to be worried about the 2030 deadline for the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans, and what it might mean for your fleet.

In this transition period, it is important to get to grips with the factors that will influence your ability to meet the deadline.

At present, Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax has been greatly reduced for low and zero-emission vehicles until 2024-25. The government has not yet given clarification as to whether these rates will remain until the end of the decade. For people responsible for fleets, it is essential to monitor updates from the government in order to be prepared for the 2030 deadline.

The fleet sector is also waiting on government advice and infrastructure about electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities, which will play a key role its ability to adapt to electrification. A market study by The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is already underway to examine the EV charging sector.

We at Marshall Leasing have been delighted to see the fleet sector’s positive response to electrification as a whole.

Paul Hollick of the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) has reported that some ‘members are no longer ordering petrol or diesel cars and it is worth bearing in mind that the 2030 change is only two or three fleet cycles away’.

He also went on to comment on the ‘loose ends that are presenting themselves in the wake of the 2030 announcement’ which include a lack of ‘serious strategy on hydrogen, which is essential for zero emissions buses and HGVs’ and ‘talk of road tolling as a replacement for fuel duty, and this needs careful discussion’.

The team at Marshall Leasing are proud to be able to support our customers during this transition period. It’s at times like this we feel privileged to share with you our expert and unbiased knowledge, so that we can give you and your business the very best advice possible.
