PACTS and IAM RoadSmart urge the government to implement an ‘alcolock’ programme

PACTS and IAM RoadSmart urge the government to implement an ‘alcolock’ programme

All new cars manufactured from 2022 will be required by law to be fitted with an ‘alcolock’ – an alcohol interlock feature which requires the driver to blow into a breath-testing tool connected to the car’s ignition system before they can start the vehicle - across Europe, but it is up to the government to decide how this feature will be used.  A new report from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport (PACTS), supported by research from IAM RoadSmart urges the government to implement an alcolock programme... Prepare to restart by optimising your fleet

Prepare to restart by optimising your fleet

As of Monday May 17th, according to the Prime Minister's roadmap out of lockdown, it will be possible to dine inside restaurants and other venues, attend events, and you can even stay at English hotels.  You will find a full summary of the roadmap out of lockdown here. We will be allowed to have meetings indoors, although all of this is recommended with continued social distancing and good ventilation of rooms.    If all goes to plan, restrictions will be released entirely from June 21st and, in theory, everything should be back to... The UK government commits to cutting carbon emissions by 78% 15 years ahead of schedule

The UK government commits to cutting carbon emissions by 78% 15 years ahead of schedule

The government has made new climate change commitments, based on the advice of its independent Climate Change Committee (CCC) which will enable the UK to cut its carbon emissions by 78% by 2035 – 15 years earlier than planned.  Climate law will, for the first time, cover aviation and shipping – likely making it more expensive for frequent fliers. To meet this new deadline, more people drivers need to make the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) and walk or cycle more, rather than driving, homes will need to be much better insulated to reduce the... Behavioural AI technology could prevent over 90% of road traffic accidents

Behaviour AI, created by Humanising Autonomy, claims to be able to prevent more than 90% of road traffic accidents. The company hopes to see the technology implemented as standard fit within the next 2-3 years. Behaviour AI has been installed and used on Arriva buses in London for over a year now and other trials have recently been launched through Humanising Autonomy’s partnership with Transport for London (TfL)’s innovation challenge FreightLab. Co-founder and chief product officer of Humanising Autonomy Leslie Nooteboom said... Read full article

BVRLA and FLA ask the government to include leasing companies in the Super Deduction initiative

According to a statement by the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA), it has, jointly with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), asked the UK government to “amend the Super Deduction initiative to boost investment in plant and machinery by extending it to include leasing and plant hire – two of the most common ways that these assets are acquired by businesses”. Director General of the FLA Stephen Haddrill said, “The Government’s decision to restrict the scope of the super deduction amounts to a... Read full article

HMRC yet to confirm if investment in EV charging qualifies for super-deduction

HMRC yet to confirm if investment in EV charging qualifies for super-deduction

In the Budget 2021, the Treasury confirmed that fleets purchasing new heavy and light commercial vehicles could benefit from a 130% super-deduction tax relief. The super deduction applies to ‘main rate expenditure’, whilst a 50% special rate first-year allowance (FYA) will apply for ‘special rate expenditure’.  Whilst it was made clear that company cars would not qualify for the tax relief, qualification for businesses investing in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure was not definitely confirmed. HMRC said that it would be... Read full article

Highways England backs trials of new tyre monitoring system

Highways England backs trials of new tyre monitoring system

A year-long trial of the WheelWright quartz senor system by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), backed by Highways England, found that one in twelve tyres were underinflated and identified 5,000 overweight vehicles on a monthly basis.  Highways England’s commercial vehicle incident prevention team (CVIPT) first backed a pilot of the system with Keele Services on the M6, before running trials with John Lewis in Milton Keynes, AW Jenkinson Transport in Penrith, and the DVSA check site at Cuerden, on the M62. These trials are... Read full article

Keep an eye out for electric tricycles in Westminster

The UK's leading resource management company Veolia has begun trialling electric pedal tricycles designed for on-street waste-collection in Westminster.  The electric tricycles are battery powered and intended to reduce pressure on the rider transporting up to 150kg of collected waste.  The trial will run over a period of three months with one electric tricycle operating in the Victoria area in Westminster and the other in the West End.  General manager at Veolia Westminster Julie Angulo said, “The electric tricycle trial is... AFP chair Paul Hollick says that a lack of charging infrastructure is hindering EV adoption

AFP chair Paul Hollick says that a lack of charging infrastructure is hindering EV adoption

The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) says that the lack of a national strategy for kerbside charging infrastructure in the UK is the biggest barrier to electric vehicle (EV) adoption by businesses. Currently, 75% of the cost of kerbside charging installation, which costs around £2,500 per unit, is met by a national fund paid and the remaining 25% is covered by local authorities.  AFP chair Paul Hollick said, “We have national fleets who are AFP members and want to go 100% EV as soon as possible. The stumbling block they face is that... Read full article

Uber launches new Uber Green service

Uber has launched a new ‘Uber Green’ service, meaning that customers can now, for the first time ever, specifically request a 100% electric taxi from Zone 1 in London.  The company says that this is the first stage in its commitment to a 100% electric service in London by 2025, “Uber Green will cost the same as a regular UberX journey on the app, as going green should never be more expensive.” Furthermore, Uber says that this option will be available in 60 European cities and 1,400 locations in the United States by the end...
