Mandatory installation of EV charges in new homes and buildings to come into force in 2022

On Monday November 22nd, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that all new homes, workplaces and buildings such as supermarkets will be required by law to install electric vehicle charging points from 2022.

The regulations, which are the first of their kind worldwide, will see 145,000 additional charge points installed annually in England in the run up to the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2030. 

This is in addition to 250,000 charge point installations at homes and workplaces already supported by the government. 

A press release by the Department for Transport suggested that these new regulations will see charging points become more readily available, ‘making it as easy as refuelling a petrol or diesel car today’.

The Prime Minister mentioned the new regulations in his speech at the recent CBI conference, where he spoke on the vital importance of the challenge and opportunity for British business and industry as the world reaches its ‘pivotal moment’. 

The Prime Minister added, “The net zero strategy is expected to trigger about £90billion of private sector investment, driving the creation of high wage high skill jobs across the UK, as part of our mission to unite and level up across the country”.

He added that the government would endeavour to fix infrastructure with “investment on a scale not seen since the Victorians”.
