Merry Christmas Everyone is dubbed the most distracting Christmas song

Whether you’re touring neighbourhood lights or heading to Winter Wonderland, getting carried away belting out your favourite Christmas song could land you with a fine of up to £5,000 and nine points on your licence if you are determined to have been driving without due care and attention in the event of an accident.
You might be intrigued to learn that Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin’ Stevens was crowned the most distracting Christmas song to listen to whilst driving, closely followed by Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano and All You’re Dreaming Of by Liam Gallagher.
Aside from performing a private concert, you could be found to be driving without due care and attention if you are:
- Fiddling with the radio or ‘infotainment’
- Setting the sat nav
- Reading a map (or anything else)
- Eating or drinking at the wheel
- Adjusting your seating position
- Allowing yourself to be distracted by passengers in the car
- Driving aggressively
- Tailgating
- Overtaking on the left-hand side
- Lane-hogging
- Not giving way where appropriate
- Swerving across lanes
- Using the wrong lane at a roundabout.
Essentially, we are talking about any action which demonstrates a lack of alertness to potential hazards on the road. Although, this does not include speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – which are separate offences.
On a side note, you might also want to deter any colleagues from adding reindeer antlers, tinsel, or any other decorations to your car this Christmas, as this could potentially be deemed ‘vehicle modification’ and result in your insurance provider refusing to pay out on a claim.
