Birmingham and Bath to introduce the first clean air zones (CAZs) outside of the London ULEZ scheme

Birmingham and Bath will introduce the first clean air zones (CAZs) outside of the London ULEZ scheme in the UK, with the Bath CAZ coming into effect on March 15 2021, and the Birmingham CAZ following on June 1 2021.

The zone in Bath will be ‘Class C’, meaning that buses, coaches, taxis, PHVs, HGVs and light goods vehicles (LGVs) will be charged, whilst the zone in Birmingham will be ‘Class D’, meaning that buses, coaches, taxis, PHVs, HGVs LGVs and cars will be charged.

Birmingham’s CAZ will cover all major routes within the Middleway Ring Road, but not the Middleway itself. In preparation, 67 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras provided by Siemens Mobility are being trialled across the city. The cameras will register every vehicle that enters the CAZ in Birmingham 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It has been predicted that 200,000 vehicles each day will be recorded.

Councillor Waseem Zaffar of Birmingham City Council said, “Birmingham remains committed to launching the Government mandated Clean Air Zone on 1 June 2021. Poor air quality remains a public health risk and a Clean Air Zone provides the city with an effective tool for tackling this issue in the shortest possible time.”

Use the government’s central CAZ service to find out if you will be charged to travel within these zones.
