Thoughts on how to maximise EV range in snowy conditions

Thoughts on how to maximise EV range in snowy conditions

Range anxiety can be a concern for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. What happens when the temperature drops?

The team at Marshall Leasing has compiled this short helpful guide to making the most of your EV’s range in snowy conditions.

Battery

Lithium-ion batteries, the most common battery type used for EVs, can sometimes be affected by the cold weather.

Tips that might help:

  • Keep it snug. Park your EV inside a garage or other enclosed space to keep it warmer.
  • Follow the science. If your EV has the option of setting a departure time, use it. This will tell the battery to prepare itself in time for your journey. Make sure you have at least 20% charge before setting off, allowing enough power for the battery to deal with colder weather.

Tyres

When the temperature drops, it can reduce your tyre pressure. Remember to check this regularly, to ensure your tyres are as safe as possible.  EV’s can still be fitted with snow tyres.

Driving tips

It’s a drag, but cold air can create more drag on your vehicle, meaning it will use more energy than usual. To avoid this, drive slower and avoid heavy braking and accelerating too heavily.

EV’s braking systems are very effective but brake slowly and well in advance as this will allow your EV to recover energy from its movement and store it as electricity using its regenerative energy system. This system can also be used when driving downhill.

Other warm tips

Use your heated seats or steering wheel heating (if you have them) sparingly to save energy, but remember your general heating system helps visibility.

Remove any snow or ice from your EV. Not only is this a legal requirement, but it will prevent your car from having to exert more energy carrying extra weight. Removing roof racks and the contents of your boot might also help.
