The UK government will fund £93million worth of ‘vital’ road upgrades

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has pledged £93million on behalf of the UK government to fund ‘vital’ road upgrade projects in North Yorkshire, Hampshire and the Midlands.

the Kex Gill section of the A59 in North Yorkshire, between the historic towns of Harrogate and Skipton will receive £56million of the funding. 

Birchley Island, situated at the intersection of the M5, A4123 and A4034 in the West Midlands will receive £24million to help reduce congestion. It is also hoped that the project will help to boost employment and improve air quality. 

Lastly, £13million will be used to upgrade the Redbridge Causeway bridges over the River Test in Hampshire, allowing local businesses access to the port of Southampton, and creating a link from the New Forest to Southampton.

These projects will cost at least £107million, meaning that local councils will be responsible for the difference after the government’s £93million funding. 

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said, “The projects will help people access work and education, as well as ensuring vital connectivity for local businesses.”

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, commented: “We desperately need more investment filtering down to local levels as the more local you get, the worse the picture is.

“It’s not just the moon-like craters on our roads that need fixing but worn-away markings too. 

“If we are going to ‘build back better’ then improvements need to reach every street and avenue.”
