Drink drivers are named and shamed as part of police tactic

We all know the potentially tragic repercussions of drink driving, and now offenders are being named and shamed as part of a police tactic in drawing people’s attention to the seriousness of the crime and also as a reminder of the consequences of being on the wrong side of the law.

As part of their annual ‘Christmas crackdown’ from December 1 2020 to January 1 2021, Surrey police named and shamed eighteen drink-driving offenders, stating their full names, age, home address, place and date of arrest, and the mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath at the time of arrest. Details of their sentence and fine amounts were also given. 

Since 2018, more than 2,600 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-driving in the Surrey area alone. 

Chief Inspector Michael Hodder of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit said, "The consequences of drink and drug-driving are far-reaching.

"Even a small amount of alcohol or substances can massively impair your ability to drive safely, and you increase the risk of seriously injuring or even killing yourself or someone else. Imagine being responsible for something like that.

"Not only have you destroyed the life of that person and their loved ones, you’ve also destroyed your own life. This is not just a warning; this is the reality”.

He added, "By raising awareness of this very serious issue, we hope to discourage people from getting behind the wheel having consumed drink or drugs. Those who do break the law will be dealt with robustly”.
