Fleet and business new car registration increased by 1,027 percent in May 2021

New data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that new car registrations to fleet and business increased by an incredible 1,027 per cent in May 2021 compared with May 2020 with 82,872 units and 7,348 units respectively. 

This compares with 73,865 new private car registrations.

It is important to note that, whilst the increase is a positive sign, the number of new car registrations to fleets and business is still down by 20% compared to the 104,293 registrations in 2019. 

SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes said, “Increased business confidence is driving the recovery, something that needs to be maintained and translated in private consumer demand as the economy emerges from pandemic support measures.

“Demand for electrified vehicles is helping encourage people into showrooms, but for these technologies to surpass their fossil-fuelled equivalents, a long-term strategy for market transition and infrastructure investment is required.”

Interestingly, the market share of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) dropped from 12 per cent in May 2020 to 8.4 per cent in May 2021. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, however, saw a 1,091 per cent increase in registrations (from 827 in May 2020 to 9,855 in May 2021) and an increased market share from 4.1 per cent in May 2020 to 6.3 per cent in May 2021.
