Cyclists and pedestrian to be given priority over cars at junctions and crossings

The Department for Transport have announced new planned changes to the Highway Code, which include a new priority shift to cyclists and pedestrians over vehicles at junctions and crossings. 

These changes are part of the government’s new £338 million fund to boost cycling and walking and are intended to accommodate and maintain the increased levels of active travel. It is hoped that supporting alternative methods of travel will help people to make “sustainable travel choices” and make our “air cleaner and cities greener”, according to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. 

As it stands, until autumn 2021, drivers are only obliged to give way to a pedestrian when they step onto a crossing. 

When the changes come into force, drivers will be required to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross on any part of the pavement. 

Under the new rules, cyclists will also be given priority at junctions when travelling straight on and new guidance will be given for safe passing distances and speeds for vehicles overtaking bicycles. 

Grant Shapps added, “Millions of us have found over the past year how cycling and walking are great ways to stay fit, ease congestion on the roads and do your bit for the environment.

“As we build back greener from the pandemic, we’re determined to keep that trend going by making active travel easier and safer for everyone.”
