The Transport Select Committee weighs in on charging infrastructure

The Transport Select Committee has highlighted the current cost disparity between charging an electric vehicle (EV) at home compared to more expensive public charging and weighed in on the measures needed to make charging infrastructure accessible and reliable.

The ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles coming into force in 2030 means that most cars on UK roads should be electric by 2050. With this in mind, the committee suggests that the public need to be protected from excessive charges and that property developers and councils should be required to implement public charging points.

The committee says that there also needs to be consideration for those who live in rural or remote areas, or do not have off-street parking.

Committee chair Huw Merriman said, "Charging electric vehicles should be convenient, straightforward and inexpensive and drivers must not be disadvantaged by where they live or how they charge their vehicles.”

Head of future markets at energy network operator National Grid Graeme Cooper said, "[we are] working with government to map out where critical grid capacity is needed to enable the faster roll out of charging points".

"There will be an uptick in demand for energy, so we need to ensure that we are future proofing, putting the right wires in the right place for future demand."

According to the BBC, Graeme Cooper added that “National Grid would have to ramp up capacity to help achieve the UK's net zero goals, both by making it smarter, but also putting in more physical infrastructure”.
