Transport for London launch consultation on the congestion charge

Transport for London (TfL) has launched a consultation which is running until October 6 2021 on the congestion charge.

TfL’s proposals are as follows:

  • A daily charge of £15.
  • Reducing the hours of operation from 07:00 to 22:00 each day, to between 07:00-18:00 Monday to Friday and between 12:00-18:00 at weekends and on Bank holidays.
  • There would be no charge between Christmas and New Year.
  • A discount of 90% for residents living in the Congestion Charge zone.
  • A pay next day charge of £17.50, and the deadline for making a delayed payment is three days after the day of travel.
  • No discount for payments made by Auto Pay or Fleet Auto Pay.
  • Retain reimbursement arrangements which would apply in exceptional circumstances.

The hours of operation of the congestion zone extended in June 2020 after TfL suffered a financial crisis following the onset of the pandemic. The charge was also increased from £11.50 to £15.

TfL says that the proposed new hours of operation are intended to reduce congestion during the busiest hours of the day and allow traffic to move through the zone without charge in the evenings and weekends to support London’s recovery from the pandemic.

It is estimated that if TfL’s proposed new congestion zone hours are implemented, there will be an increase in sustainable travel with around 8,000 new public transport trips and 3,000 walking and cycling trips each day on the weekend.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said, “As we look to the future it’s vital the charge strikes the right balance between supporting London’s economic recovery and helping ensure it is a green and sustainable one.

“These proposals support the capital’s culture, hospitality and night-time businesses which have struggled so much, as well as encouraging people to walk, cycle and use public transport.”
