EV chargers to be a mandatory feature in all new homes and offices

On September 9 2021, Transport Minister Rachel Maclean announced new legislation set to be introduced this year which says that electric vehicle (EV) chargers must be built as standard into all new homes and offices.

Office charging infrastructure is crucial, as it is estimated that around a third of households in Britain have no off-street parking.

The legislation, which is the first of its kind globally, comes as it was revealed that only around 500 electric vehicle charging points are being installed each month. This falls significantly short of the estimated 700 per day required according to industry bodies.

As of July 1 2021, there were 24,374 public EV chargers in the UK.

Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said, “We will publish our consultation response on requiring all new residential and non-residential buildings to have a charge point and we intend to lay legislation later this year.

“We also confirmed our intention to mandate that home and workplace electric vehicle chargers must be capable of smart charging.”

Smart charging involves the charge point using a data connection to ‘communicate’ with the vehicle about when is best to plug in, preventing the electricity network from being overloaded by too many drivers plugging in at once.
