A national pavement parking prohibition could come into force

A national pavement parking prohibition could come into force

Parking your car on the pavement is already illegal in London, but this year we could see these rules apply in other areas of the country.

Expected changes to the law could see a ‘national pavement parking prohibition’ introduced, meaning that you could be fined £70 for parking on the kerb – even outside of your own home.

The rules are intended to prevent vehicles from obstructing the pathway, which is potentially hazardous for guide dog users and disabled pedestrians.

Current legislation applying to London provides an exemption to the rule of no pavement parking for breakdown or emergency service vehicles; highway maintenance vehicles; utility maintenance vehicles; or where it can be proved that a vehicle had been used for loading and unloading goods.

According to Ask the Police, whilst it is not yet specifically prohibited to park on a pavement, drivers could still be issued penalties if their vehicle is causing an obstruction.

Police forces throughout the country are already able to issue on-the-spot fines for vehicles parked on the pavement which are deemed to be causing an obstruction.
