London’s ULEZ is set to expand again

Transport for London is consulting on another expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to cover the entirety of Greater London by the end of 2023.

The zone was already expanded in October 2021 from the Congestion Zone up to the North and South Circular roads. 

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan made it clear that, in light of these new expansion plans, he would no longer be considering a Clean Air Charge for those driving in London or a charge for non-residents to enter the capital.

He said, “At a time when people’s budgets are under pressure, I’m not willing to ask people to pay more unless I’m absolutely convinced it’s justified to save lives and protect the health of Londoners.

“I believe the proposal to extend the ULEZ London-wide will have the biggest effect on emissions and congestion relative to the potential financial impact on Londoners as a whole.”

Analysis by the PA news agency found that an additional 3.5 million people will live within the new ULEZ zone and the mayor’s office estimates that an additional 135,000 non-compliant vehicles per day will be charged the £12.50 ULEZ fee.

As a general rule, diesel cars registered before 2015 and petrol cars registered before 2005 do not meet the emissions standard of the ULEZ and will be charged to enter.
