Illegal use of e-scooters is set to be tackled by new legislation

Did you know that private use of an e-scooter in public spaces and on roads is illegal, unless  it has been hired through a government trial?

To tackle this issue, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced on April 27th before the Transport Committee that new legislation will be introduced.

The Transport Secretary also defended the safety of the government’s e-scooter trails, which has been questioned since the release of new figures from the Major Trauma Group showed an 82 per cent rise in e-scooter related accidents attended by NHS Ambulance Trusts during 2021 compared with 2020. The data also showed a 40 per cent increase in patients being admitted to A&E following an accident involving an e-scooter.

Trevor Sterling, chair of the Major Trauma Group, said: “It is essential that we address the serious safety concerns arising from e-scooter trials for the safety of all roads users.

“We must therefore bridge the gap in knowledge of the legal status of privately owned e-scooters and push for all types of e-scooters to be legal, with stricter safety standards implemented.”
