Industry and government collaboration is key to boosting electric van uptake, says BVRLA

The latest statistics from the Society of Motoring Manufactures and Traders (SMMT) show that electric vans accounted for just 5.6 per cent of new light commercial vehicles in between January 1 and June 30 2022.

At the recent British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) Fleets in Charge conference held on July 7, Chief Executive Gerry Keaney said, “There’s a lack of tax incentives to support the fleet sector in increasing the uptake of electrical vans. There's inadequate charging infrastructure to support the rather specific needs of the sector and of course, there's an absolute scarcity of the right sorts of commercial vehicles with the many different use cases to be addressed.”

“With commercial vehicles there is no silver bullet that will address all the needs. Instead, tailored, rather nuanced solutions need to be put in place. It’s very clear to us that this can only be achieved – as it has been to a very large extent with cars – by a really extensive collaboration between decision makers across the whole country.”

The plug-in car grant ended in June 2022, but similar grants are still available for electric vans under the Plug-in van and truck grant.

Electric vans that are less than 2.5 tonnes in gross vehicle weight which emit CO2 emissions less than 50 grams per kilometre and are able to travel at least 60 miles without emitting any emissions are eligible for a grant of 35 per cent of the purchase price (up to £2,500).

Larger electric vans between 2.5-4.25-tonnes in gross vehicle weight, which meet the same standards as above, can also qualify for a 35 per cent grant (up to £5,000).
