Drivers who are found guilty of causing the death of another person in relation to speeding, using a mobile phone whilst driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs could receive a sentence of life without parole in prison.

The Licence Bureau, supplier of driver licence validation services, is warning fleet managers that they are ultimately responsible for the actions of their drivers, meaning they could be liable for driving offences committed by these employees.

Online UK Road Offender Education (UKROEd) courses could be made permanent, says TTC group, following the success of virtual classrooms using the Zoom app during the lockdown period, over which the frequency of speeding offences has tripled.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has updated its Vehicle Speed Compliance Statistics (SPE) to include data from 2019.
The DfT updated a series of reports relating to speed compliance in Great Britain, the broadest of which is the SPE0112 report, of which the findings are cause for concern. It showed that 54% of car drivers were exceeding 30mph speed limits in 2019, a fifth of whom were recorded at speeds over 35mph. Worse still, 6% of these offenders were caught at 40mph or more.

Penalty charge notices (PCNs) cover a broad range of road traffic offences, such as not paying a congestion charge, going against a ‘no left turn’ sign, or driving in a bus lane.

Road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, is calling for the UK government action over the staggering number of reported deaths relating to drink-driving.
The Department for Transport last updated the ‘Reported drinking and driving (RAS51)' statistical data set for Great Britain on August 27 2020, to reveal that there were 8,680 drink-driving related casualties in 2018. This equates to more than 23 people suffering injury or death as a consequence of drink-driving every day. Of these casualties, there were 260 fatalities.

The Department for Transport (DfE) has released statistics covering the period between March 1 2020, to August 17 2020, which show that the amount of vehicles on the road in Great Britain roughly equate to what we would normally currently see at this time of year.
According to the last update to this data, on August 17 2020 the amount of cars on the road stood at 88% of normal levels, while light commercial vehicles and heavy good vehicles were both at 100%. The percentages shown in the figures are ‘of an equivalent day or week’.

The charity Global Action Plan (GAP) has called on the government to enforce a minimum 15% sale quota of purely electric vehicles for UK car manufacturers.
As it stands, car brands must meet a CO2-based target, or fleet emissions target. However, the public has expressed its concern and desire for affordable electric vehicles. The Department for Transport (DfT) announced that “The UK is taking steps forward in automated technology in vehicles with the launch of a call for evidence” on August 18 2020.
