French car parks will be required to install solar panels in the next 3-5 years

In 2019, a French court ordered its Government to ‘repair’ the country’s emissions shortcomings between 2015 and 2018 by then end of 2022. With the deadline now looming, the French Senate has approved a bill which requires car parks with 80 or more parking spaces to install solar panels covering at least half the area of the car park itself. Almost half of drivers have been fined for speeding before

Data obtained by Confused.com through a Freedom of Information request to UK police found that: £45.7 million worth of fines are handed out to UK drivers each year. 1.74 million speeding offences were recorded over a 12-month period. 49,000 of those speeding offences were captured by one camera on the A40 – a figure which is more than double that of any other camera in the UK over the same period. 20MPH speed limits have ‘little impact’ on road safety, says new study

Reducing speed limits from 30MPH to 20MPH has had ‘little impact’ on road safety, according to new research by Queen’s University Belfast, Edinburgh University, and the University of Cambridge. The three-year study, which involved implementing 20MPH speed limits on 76 roads in Belfast, found that although there was no notable improvement in road safety, the volume of traffic in those areas reduced, with 166 fewer vehicles per week observed during the morning rush hour after the new speed limits were introduced. Poor vehicle maintenance contributed to 1,700 road casualties in 2021

The AA has found that defects and poor maintenance contributed to 1,700 road traffic accidents resulting in casualties during 2021. This figure has risen seven per cent compared with 2020. Faulty brakes were the most common defect and resulted in 740 casualties and 10 fatalities. Damaged tyres contributed to 491 casualties and 12 fatalities. Faults with steering and vehicle suspension contributed to 255 casualties and 6 fatalities. Warning issued to ‘rowdy drivers’ as new cameras are set to tackle ‘antisocial driving’

Bradford, South Gloucestershire, Great Yarmouth, and Birmingham are hosting pilot schemes, backed by the UK government, trialling a new road camera which will identify and track drivers who break the law by excessively revving vehicles’ engines using modified exhausts. These ‘antisocial driving’ offenders are often referred to as ‘boy racers’. Loopholes around driving bans are set to be closed for good

According to the government's website, you can be disqualified from driving if you build up 12 or more penalty points on your driving licence within a period of 3 years. Furthermore, after a second disqualification, the ban can rise to one year. Then to two years for a third ban. London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone could expand further in 2023

Transport for London is consulting on proposals to further expand London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which could come into force next year on 29 August 2023. The new zone would cover the same area as the current Low Emission Zone, which charges the most heavily polluting vehicles. Under the proposals, a daily charge of £12.50 would apply to drivers of non-compliant vehicles which enter the zone. Drivers are being advised to book their MOT well in advance

The AA is urging drivers of vehicle which are due to be MOT tested between now and December to book well in advance. There are more than 10 million cars, vans and minibuses due to be tested during the Autumn period.
