The cost of charging an EV is nearing that of fuelling an ICE vehicle

The cost of charging an electric vehicle when using a public facility has risen by 42 per cent and is nearing the same price as fuelling internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

According to the RAC, exclusively using rapid or ultra-rapid public EV chargers costs around 18 pence per mile, compared with roughly 19 pence per mile for petrol and 21 pence per mile for diesel.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said, "It remains the case that charging away from home costs less than refuelling a petrol or diesel car, but these figures show that the gap is narrowing as a result of the enormous increases in the cost of electricity.”

Interestingly, investigation by the AA found that the rising costs of domestic energy appear to be putting some people off of switching to an electric vehicle. This is supported by the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which show that the rapid increase in registrations of new purely electric cars has slowed from a year-on-year increase of 102 per cent in the first three months of 2022 to 49 per cent as of the end of August.

In response to an AA survey, 63 per cent of respondents listed the increase in home electric bills as their main reason for sticking with internal combustion engine vehicles.

AA head of roads policy Jack Cousens said, "With domestic energy prices rising, drivers can be forgiven for believing switching to an EV will become expensive quickly.

"However, the reality is that even with the hike in domestic electricity costs, running an EV is considerably cheaper than a petrol or diesel car."
