New Congestion Charge Policy Could Provoke Unintended Reaction, Says Marshall Leasing

Feedback gathered by Marshall Leasing on the change in London congestion charging policy suggests that businesses will not be manipulated into fulfilling the Mayor of London’s electric vehicle vision, and that the increased financial burden could encourage them to look at other, contrary ways to cut costs. A number of the London-based Marshall Leasing clients questioned admitted that the new Ultra Low Emission Discount will not prompt them to buy an electric fleet to run in the capital. Instead, there was concern about how a price hike will be managed following... Read full article

Take Action - Go Greener

Take Action - Go Greener

We're being given plenty of reasons to think ‘green’ at the moment. The Chancellor gave us some in his recent Budget, the Mayor of London has offered a few with his latest congestion charging plans, and manufacturers and technology providers are constantly evolving their products with environmental impact in mind. It’s fair to say that green is most definitely ‘in’ – and with good reason. Did you know that…? As of June last year, there were 34.6-million licensed vehicles on Britain’s roads. That’s... Could You Be Paying Too Much For Parking Fines?

Could You Be Paying Too Much For Parking Fines?

The cost of doing business in urban areas is high. Making that sale or carrying out your duties often means overstaying your welcome and picking up a parking fine from the meter-milkers. Some businesses factor the additional cost of parking fines into their whole-life cost scenario, while others pass the cost back to the driver. Either way it’s an added financial burden, and that hurts. If your blood pressure wasn’t already hitting the danger zone at this point, to add pain to injury, when the finance department gets the final bill forwarded on by their... Read full article

The Countdown Begins

The Countdown Begins

Looking ahead and in a couple of months’ time spring will have sprung, the thanks-giving and feasting of Easter will still be fresh in our memories, and at Marshall Leasing we’ll be gearing up for a very special event. As with Easter, good food will be on the brain – gateau and pain aplenty you might say – indeed heading up the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association's menu of choice will be our very own ‘Cakebread’, as Marshall Leasing’s managing director is recognised by the industry for... Grey Fleet: Things to Keep You Awake at Night

Grey Fleet: Things to Keep You Awake at Night

For some companies, the grey fleet approach can sound very appealing. On the surface, it seems to cut out a considerable amount of the time and cost usually associated with managing a fleet. But it’s all too easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. Increasingly, grey fleets are proving a more expensive and time-consuming option than they first appear. There is also the issue of control. When choosing a grey fleet over other options, many of the elements which would usually be under Management’s control are suddenly in the hands of employees. Certain... Read full article

The Road Ahead: 2013

The Road Ahead: 2013

Marshall Leasing MD, Peter Cakebread, takes a look at some of the challenges and opportunities facing the industry this year, from pre-registration to electric vans. It’s hard to sum up 2012 in just a few words. It was, at best, a mixed year for the fleet industry. On the one hand, a shortage of supply in the used car market helped stock to retain its value. On the other, the sales environment proved extremely tough as fleet operators tightened their belts. But a new year offers the chance to take stock and plan for the road ahead. As ever, there are both... Read full article

A Twist in the Tale of VAT Reclaim

A Twist in the Tale of VAT Reclaim

Last month, the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) held its annual industry conference, which was chaired this year by our very own Peter Cakebread. The agenda was packed full of topical issues, but one piece of news that stood out for us was the latest instalment of the VAT reclaim story. When the Government revisited the issue of VAT reclaim recently it looked as though it would be bad news for businesses… Now, however, it appears that the tale could be one of woe for the Government instead – who in trying to justify a reduction in the... Marshall Leasing Shows Its Support for Local Youth Theatre Group Spotlight Productions

Cambridgeshire-based vehicle management and finance company Marshall Leasing is donating £750 to local youth theatre group Spotlight Productions after the non-profit suffered from a break in this September. With over £2,500 worth of equipment stolen and a Christmas production due to go on in under a month, the group is in need of funds to replenish its supplies and Marshall Leasing has been on hand to help out. Spotlight Productions was set up eight years ago by Graham and Sarah Wilkinson. Since then it has grown to a team of more than 50 leaders and... Read full article

Get up to Speed on Your MID Status

Get up to Speed on Your MID Status

There's no question that a fully insured fleet is a must-have. Making sure your drivers and vehicles are covered by the correct insurance is one of the basics of fleet management. But along with this comes an extra responsibility that some businesses aren't unaware of: all the cars in your fleet must also be registered on the Motor Insurance Database. What is the MID and why is it important? With around one in twenty cars on Britain's roads without proper insurance, the Motor Insurance Database (MID) was created by the insurance industry to help improve... Read full article

Fleet Growth: Bucking the Trend

Fleet Growth: Bucking the Trend

Earlier this month a refreshed FN50 was released by Fleet News revealing the top 50 contract hire and leasing companies according to fleet size. Updated annually, the FN50 list offers a benchmark for the industry and its key players. Marshall Leasing has been climbing the rankings steadily over the past few years and while growth has slowed recently we've continued the upward trend again in 2012. We moved from position 28 to 27, with 5,716 cars under our care, compared with 5,570 the year before. Unfortunately, the picture hasn’t been quite so... Read full article
