The Most Exciting Concept Cars of 2017
09 October 2017
There haven’t been many, but what 2017’s concept cars have lacked in quantity, they have certainly made up for in quality, power, technology, and general craziness.
Here’s our round up of the top 5 concept cars of 2017, all of which were featured at this year's Detroit Auto Show.
Nissan Vmotion 2.0 Concept
The Nissan Vmotion 2.0 concept is living proof that cumbersome sedans may have a future after all.
Nissan has done this by going beyond crazy specs and impressive sounding figures, to design a car that looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi epic. With new screens for self-driving, advanced Bluetooth connectivity, suicide doors, and its trademark imposing grille, the Vmotion stands head and shoulders above the existing crowd of typical, boring family sedans. Although some of the features won’t make it into production, it’s believed the Vmotion 2.0 is the future of the current Nissan Maxima.
Audi Q8
At 5 metres long and 2 metres wide, Audi’s prelude to their latest flagship model — due for release in 2018 — takes space and luxury to a whole other level.
With the new Q8, Audi will no doubt continue their dominance of the luxury SUV field. Features of note include a dual-touchscreen system that demonstrates the impressive next evolution of their award-winning Virtual Cockpit, as well as a 330-kW plug-in hybrid powertrain that provides plenty of torque for a nippy and economical ride.
Infiniti QX50
The QX50 Concept of Infiniti, the luxury vehicle division of Nissan, is a premium mid-size SUV that is evidently a preview of their upcoming QX50.
In terms of design, it’s almost identical to the QX Sport Inspiration concept that stunned the world last April. However, the QX50 packs much better tech and performance. The new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine offers greater power and fuel economy, while the wide touchscreen display in the centre dash introduces the ProPilot driver assist feature in style.
Lexus UX
If you’re looking to impress, look no further than the Lexus UX — the most outlandish concept car of 2017.
The UX is a crossover SUV with striking design features. The huge front grille appears to be a threat to everything, as well as the slit-like headlights, sharp angles, bold rims, and huge arches. The interior is no less aggressive, with a new seating system that’s so crazy it has its own press release. It’s uncertain how many of the UX’s feature Lexus will use in production, but it’s exciting for things to come.
VW I.D. BUZZ
2017 is the year we see the return of the much loved VW microbus, in the form of a four-wheel-drive, all electric MPV called the I.D. BUZZ.
The BUZZ draws heavily on its origins for stylistic inspiration, but still manages to come across as futuristic thanks to its minimalistic and technology-shaped design details. With its electric car architecture, it boasts masses of cabin space and an occupancy of up to 8 people. And with the floor-mounted 11kWh lithium-ion battery, VW claim it has a range of 372 miles. The BUZZ is expected to hit the market in 2022.
