Merry Christmas Everyone is dubbed the most distracting Christmas song

Whether you’re touring neighbourhood lights or heading to Winter Wonderland, getting carried away belting out your favourite Christmas song could land you with a fine of up to £5,000 and nine points on your licence if you are determined to have been driving without due care and attention in the event of an accident.  You might be intrigued to learn that Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin’ Stevens was crowned the most distracting Christmas song to listen to whilst driving, closely followed by Feliz Navidad by José... ‘Tis the season for mulled cider and wine, but not while you’re driving

‘Tis the season for mulled cider and wine, but not while you’re driving

If you plan to be ‘merry’ this holiday season, remember to promote a designated driver or call a taxi when you’re headed home from any Christmas celebrations.  Earlier this year, the road safety group THINK! launched a campaign which called on young men to intervene and ‘Pint Block’ their mates after it was discovered that a third would not intervene if a friend was planning to drink and drive. Statistics show that 60 young drivers aged 17-24 are killed or injured each month in car accidents whilst found to be over the legal... Read full article

Rules on mobile phone usage whilst driving set to be strengthened

A public consultation by the Department for Transport (DfT) recently found that 80 per cent of people supported the strengthening of laws to ban any hand-held mobile phone usage whilst driving, not just texting and making calls. According to a press release from the DfT, new rules will come into force next year, banning taking photographs or videos, scrolling through playlists or playing games on a hand-held device whilst driving.  Drivers caught breaking the new rules will receive a £200 fixed penalty notice (FPN) and have 6 points... Don’t add a parking fine to your Christmas shopping list

Don’t add a parking fine to your Christmas shopping list

December is officially upon us, which can only mean that the chaos of Christmas shopping is just on the horizon. But it’s not just your list which you should be checking twice – you may also want to double-check that you’ve paid for parking. New Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) figures obtained and released by the RAC Foundation show that 159 different private parking companies issued parking tickets to drivers in April and June 2021 - a 64 per cent increase compared with April and June in 2016.  Separate statistics from the... New EV charging point design unveiled

New EV charging point design unveiled

In September 2021, the Department for Transport (DfT) appointed the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to create an ‘iconic’ British electric vehicle charging point design, in hopes of it becoming ‘as recognisable as the red post box’.  A prototype was revealed by transport secretary Grant Schapps at the recent COP26 climate summit and labelled by the DfT ‘Britain’s latest iconic design’.  Most notably, the design features a distinctive circular handle which lights up when the... Mandatory installation of EV charges in new homes and buildings to come into force in 2022

On Monday November 22nd, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that all new homes, workplaces and buildings such as supermarkets will be required by law to install electric vehicle charging points from 2022. The regulations, which are the first of their kind worldwide, will see 145,000 additional charge points installed annually in England in the run up to the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2030.  This is in addition to 250,000 charge point installations at homes and workplaces already supported by the government.  A press... Shortfall of 35,000 EV mechanics predicted

Shortfall of 35,000 EV mechanics predicted

As we approach the 2030 deadline for the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles and electric vehicle (EV) sales increase, some people are concerned about a potential shortage of mechanics who are qualified to work on EVs.  The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) predicts that by 2030 the UK will need 90,000 qualified technicians to service EVs and that, with the current rate of training, there will be a shortfall of more than 35,000.  Alex Gibson, a technical trainer at the Bosch EV training centre told the BBC in a recent interview... Industry bodies say the government missed a ‘golden opportunity’ for road repair during the pandemic

New figures from the Department for Transport reveal that 23 per cent of B and C roads in the UK, as well as small unclassified roads, were in need of repair in 2020 last year. A concerning percentage of minor and rural roads in Derbyshire, the west London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and Bath & North East Somerset are in the ‘red’ category for road surface damage (68, 50 and 42 per cent respectively). In comparison, major A-roads and motorways managed by National Highways were found to be in better condition, with 7 per cent and 4 per cent... Read full article

Transport Select Committee publishes report calling for no more smart motorways

A report published by the Transport Select Committee on November 2nd suggests that implementation of new smart motorways should be halted and alternative options explored whilst safety data is collected and analysed.  In 2020, BBC Panorama found that 38 people were killed on smart motorways between 2014 and 2019. The report says, "The government and National Highways should pause the rollout of new all-lane running schemes until five years of safety and economic data is available for every all-lane running scheme introduced before 2020 and the... The AFP has created a new Dealer Standard

The AFP has created a new Dealer Standard

The Association of Fleet Professionals (APF) has introduced a new guide: The AFP Dealer Standard, which it hopes will be voluntarily adopted industrywide by dealers and fleets as a benchmark for vehicle delivery. The Association has created the standard in response to a handful of factors which, in recent years, have made the handover element of receiving a new vehicle ‘even more critical’. These elements are:  A higher level of complexity in vehicle features and functions which the AFP says, ‘are often wide-ranging and complex, and... Read full article
