The DfT announces a new Road Safety Investigation Branch

The Department for Transport (DfT) recently announced that it will be recruiting a specialised team to form the UK’s first Road Safety Investigation Branch (RSIB), which will investigate ‘themes’ in the causes of road traffic accidents, make recommendations for how they can be reduced and explore how new technology, such as self-driving vehicles, can be introduced on UK roads.   The DfT believes that this new department could drastically improve road safety in the UK and reduce collisions, with a knock-on effect of reducing a related £30... Charging an EV is still cheaper than fuelling an ICE vehicle, despite rises in energy prices

The EV charging app Zap Map has released new research in partnership with GoCompare electric vehicle insurance which shows that rising energy prices mean EV drivers will be paying an annual average of £220 more to charge their vehicle this year than in 2021.  The research found that, as of June 2022, the cost of rapidly charging an EV has risen to 48 pence per kWh from 35 pence per kWh in December 2021. Regular EV charging has also increased to 33 pence per kWh from 24 pence per kWh in the same period. Of course, EV drivers are still better off... Read full article

Industry and government collaboration is key to boosting electric van uptake, says BVRLA

The latest statistics from the Society of Motoring Manufactures and Traders (SMMT) show that electric vans accounted for just 5.6 per cent of new light commercial vehicles in between January 1 and June 30 2022. At the recent British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) Fleets in Charge conference held on July 7, Chief Executive Gerry Keaney said, “There’s a lack of tax incentives to support the fleet sector in increasing the uptake of electrical vans. Addressing the age-old question of driver safety

As the population of drivers becomes older, reflecting demographics, their safety on the roads is being called into question. A recent article by The Telegraph referred to new statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which show that the average life expectancy of people in the UK is now creeping towards 82.  Key findings from the Reported Road Casualties Great Britain: Older Drivers factsheet 2020 by the Department for Transport show that the number of over 70s with a full UK driving licence has increased by 23.6% from 4.5million in 2016... TFL and London Borough Councils to issue £160 fines for cars veering into cycle lanes

Transport for London and London Borough councils are now able to issue penalty charge notices to drivers who veer into cycle lanes. Offenders caught within the first six months of this new scheme will receive a warning rather than a fine. After this period, the fine will be £160, or £80 if paid within two weeks. This comes after local councils throughout the country were recently handed the power to issue fines for traffic offences such as stopping in a yellow box junction.    Head of Roads Policy for the AA Jack Cousins told The... What is driving without due care and attention?

You may have seen headlines such as ‘£5,000 fines for driving without sunglasses’ and be wondering what your dress sense could possibly have to do with driving safely.  Driving with due care and attention is a broad rule which, when broken, can carry a fine as well as penalty points or even a driving ban, depending on the severity of the offence.   Anything from wearing inappropriate clothing, such as flip flops, to chatting with passengers in your vehicle could potentially put you at risk of driving without due care and attention. It is a... Read full article
