The Geospatial Commission recently published a report outlining how better use of location data can help build a network of electric vehicle chargepoints and overcome the following challenges:
‘Modelling future demand. Demand modelling can provide planners with data-driven evidence to identify how many and what types of chargepoints need to go where and by when, taking into account local needs.’
‘Finding suitable sites. Improved access to more granular data about energy capacity and physical constraints can support planners to identify the...

The EV charging app Zap Map has released new research in partnership with GoCompare electric vehicle insurance which shows that rising energy prices mean EV drivers will be paying an annual average of £220 more to charge their vehicle this year than in 2021.
The research found that, as of June 2022, the cost of rapidly charging an EV has risen to 48 pence per kWh from 35 pence per kWh in December 2021. Regular EV charging has also increased to 33 pence per kWh from 24 pence per kWh in the same period.
Of course, EV drivers are still better off...

Solar car park funder and operator 3ti has created a new pop-up solar-powered electric vehicle charging up which can be deployed in just 24 hours.
Three modular canopies supporting 36 solar power optimise charging speed and reduce the carbon intensity of electricity used, and the unit itself is built around a recycled shipping container.
The hub, Papilio3, can support up to 12 EV chargepoints with a battery storage capacity of up to 250 kWh and is hoped to help boost the roll out of EV charging infrastructure and help to...

Following the recent rises in electricity and gas prices, the cost of rapidly charging electric vehicles has risen dramatically, the RAC told the BBC.
Even in the current market, EV charging is still almost half the price per mile of fuelling a petrol or diesel car which has risen 25 and 30 per cent respectively.
However, charging an EV on a pay-as-you-go, non-subscription basis at a public rapid charge point has risen by 21 per cent in the last nine months. Charging an EV at home has also become more expensive and prices vary according to the...

Quantum technology could reduce the charging time of electric vehicles from ten hours down to just three minutes.
Scientists from the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea are researching the possibility of dramatically reducing charging time through the use of quantum physics by charging all of the cells in the battery simultaneously, as opposed to independently of one another as traditional EV batteries do.
The Institute said, “While the maximum charging speed increases linearly with the number of cells in classical batteries, the...

A new roadside assistance policy extended as an insurance product aims to tackle the issue of ‘range anxiety’ and will be made available through the newly developed Recharge Rescue.
In the event of losing power, electric vehicle (EV) drivers covered by the new policy can call an emergency number for assistance 24/7, at which point a van featuring a 7.2kW EV ‘fast charging’ unit will be dispatched to their location with a target ETA of 90 minutes. A further 30 minutes is required to charge the stranded vehicle, providing between 10-15 miles...

Trials of a new portable electric vehicle charging solution created by ZipCharge will soon commence and could provide operational and cost benefits for fleet owners.
The solution, Go Charger, is expected to contain between 4 and 8kWh of energy and provide between 32 to 64 kms of range at a 7.2kW EV charging rate. This means that it would take 30 to 60 minutes to charge an electric vehicle on average.
The portable charger itself can be charged from any plug socket and is then wheeled to your vehicle using the retractable handle, similarly to...

A new trial which is set to begin between April and June 2022 will see electric vehicles (EVs) charging on driveways plugged into a system which helps to balance the national grid.
The EVs would essentially serve as a giant battery to balance energy supply at times of low wind speeds as the country moves away from fossil fuels and towards greener energy sources.
If successful we could see a national rollout of the system, allowing suppliers to draw power from parked vehicles at times of low supply or high demand.
EV owners will need to agree for power...
