Cost of charging an EV has dramatically increased in line with gas and electricity price increases

Following the recent rises in electricity and gas prices, the cost of rapidly charging electric vehicles has risen dramatically, the RAC told the BBC.

Even in the current market, EV charging is still almost half the price per mile of fuelling a petrol or diesel car which has risen 25 and 30 per cent respectively.

However, charging an EV on a pay-as-you-go, non-subscription basis at a public rapid charge point has risen by 21 per cent in the last nine months. Charging an EV at home has also become more expensive and prices vary according to the household tariff, but it remains the more cost effective method of charging an EV with tariffs as low as 4.5p per kilowatt hour during off-peak hours.

Charging from lampposts was also found to be 46 per cent cheaper than on-the-road rapid charging, though this is currently only available in limited areas of the UK.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said, "While electric car drivers may not be immune from the rocketing price of wholesale energy - most notably gas, which in turn dictates the cost of electricity - there's no doubt that charging an electric vehicle still represents excellent value for money compared to filling up a petrol or diesel car.”

Using the Zap Map tool, you can easily see where there are EV charge points throughout the UK and the cost of recharging at each one. According to Zap Map, BP Pulse, Instavolt and Osprey are the three most widely used EV charging companies.

Data from Zap Map shows that ultra-rapid chargers are, on average, 14 per cent more expensive to use than rapid chargers.
