Why its clever to use smart EV charging

Why its clever to use smart EV charging

Smart charge points communicate with each other, your car and the charging grid. The main benefit of smart charging is optimising grid power and efficiency.  Without smart charging, the grid is at risk of becoming overloaded, which could impact the ability for you to charge your car at certain times and potentially make charging more costly.  How does smart charging work?  The word ‘smart’ generally refers to automation, as is the case for smart EV charging.  When you plug your EV into a smart charger, the charger shares... A national pavement parking prohibition could come into force

A national pavement parking prohibition could come into force

Parking your car on the pavement is already illegal in London, but this year we could see these rules apply in other areas of the country.  Expected changes to the law could see a ‘national pavement parking prohibition’ introduced, meaning that you could be fined £70 for parking on the kerb – even outside of your own home. The rules are intended to prevent vehicles from obstructing the pathway, which is potentially hazardous for guide dog users and disabled pedestrians.   Current legislation applying to London provides an... British Parking Association propose to increase maximum parking fines to £120

British Parking Association propose to increase maximum parking fines to £120

Whilst ministers aim to reduce maximum parking fines from £100 to £50, the British Parking Association (BPA) is proposing that it should instead be raised to £120.  Motorists can receive parking fines for offences including parking in two bays – this applies even if just one wheel is slightly over the white line – or overstaying by any amount of time, even a few minutes.  Based on a minimum wage of £8.91 for 35-hour week, it would take the equivalent of two days to pay off a £120 parking ticket.  President... New hierarchy of road users

New hierarchy of road users

A new ‘hierarchy of road users’ system for the Highway Code will be introduced on January 29 2022.  The hierarchy means that the road user who can cause the most damage, possesses the greatest responsibility to protect other road users around them. For example, a person driving a car has a greater responsibility to keep the road safe for cyclists and pedestrians.  Results of a government consultation showed that 78 per cent of respondents were in favour of this new system, with just 18 per cent objecting.  Additional updates to... TfL to permanently enforce 24/7 bus lanes on red route

TfL to permanently enforce 24/7 bus lanes on red route

Transport for London (TfL) recently announced that, following a pilot scheme in September 2020, more than 100 bus lanes on TfL’s red route, throughout 20 boroughs, will be operational 24/7.  This means that anyone who enters these lanes could face a fine of up to £130 at any time of day, on any day of the week.  The pilot scheme was undertaken after mass traffic began slowing down buses after the end of the first wave of the pandemic.  Before the new variant of Covid-19 arrived at the end of last year, bus passenger numbers in the area... Do you keep an atlas in your vehicle?

Do you keep an atlas in your vehicle?

An AA-Yonder poll of over 15,000 drivers recently found that almost one in every five have never updated their road atlas. Other key statistics included: 11 per cent renew their copy every five years or more.  18 per cent renew their copy every three years or more. 7 per cent renew their copy annually.  Managing Director at AA Media Simon Numphud said, “With nearly half a million copies of this year’s range already sold, it is clear that for British motorists the AA Atlas range is still a vital companion when exploring the UK. With the... Read full article

V2G technology could allow EVs to power homes

A new project, EV-elocity, which involves the universities of Nottingham and Warwick led by Cenex is using special vehicle-to-grid (V2G) chargers in various locations throughout England to gain insights into the possibility of using EV charging technology to power homes. Funded by The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and facilitated by Innovate UK, the project is exploring the possibility of using EV batteries to store electricity and later release it back into the...
