UK’s largest EV charging hub opens at the NEC in Birmingham

The UK’s largest public electric vehicle charging hub has been opened by BP Pulse, The EV Newtork (EVN) and the NEC Group on the NEC Campus in Birmingham. The Gigahub, which is capable of charging 180 EVs simultaneously with its 30 ultra-fast 300kW and 150 7kW chargers, will serve seven million annual visitors to the NEC Campus, including those attending Fleet & Mobility Live in October. The ultra-fast chargers are available on-demand at a rate of 85p per kWh and the 7kW units are available through pre-booking only, at a rate of 59p per kWh. BP Pulse... Read full article

Councils receive just two thirds of the funds needed for road repairs

The UK’s annual expenditure on local roads maintenance fell from £4 billion in 2006 to £2 billion in 2019. This is despite estimates from the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) that say tackling potholes in the UK could cost £14 billion. The organisation also revealed that around 37,000 miles of road surface, representing 18 per cent of the local roads network, is in poor condition with less than five years of life left. The UK government increased the Potholes Fund for English road repairs by £200 million to £700 million for this... Read full article

New research aims to reduce road accidents caused by driver sleepiness

The Road Safety Trust is funding a new research project which aims to reduce road traffic accidents caused by driver sleepiness. The three-year project called SleepiEST, which is being carried out by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and the National Police Wellbeing Service, will monitor police shift-workers who drive either to commute or as part of their work. Data will be collected in three phases: A nationwide survey of serving officers and police employees will be conducted to collect information on sleep, fatigue, shift patterns and driving... Fires resulting from low-quality e-scooter batteries and chargers are a ‘fast growing trend’

Fires resulting from low-quality e-scooter batteries and chargers are a ‘fast growing trend’

It was recently revealed that the London Fire Brigade (LFB) had recorded 93 fires originating from e-bikes and 18 from e-scooters so far in 2023. There have been three deaths from battery fires in London. LFB Assistant Commissioner Charlie Pugsley has labelled the fires, resulting from cheap batteries and inappropriate charging devices, the “fastest growing fire trend" in London. Whilst manufactured e-bikes and scooters are built to comply with safety regulations, issues are arising when people convert regular bicycles into e-bikes using unregulated... Read full article

Six in ten drivers want to see anti-noise pollution measures in place

Six in ten drivers want to see anti-noise pollution measures in place

The RAC recently conducted a survey which found that six in ten drivers would like to see technology that can detect vehicles producing noise pollution above legal levels implemented on UK roads. Excessive noise is usually made by drivers who unnecessarily rev their engines or have modified their vehicles with loud exhausts. Noise camera trials, funded by the Department for Transport, began in Bradford, Bristol, Great Yarmouth and Birmingham in October 2022. Video cameras and a number of microphones are used to detect vehicles exceeding the noise limit of 74... Read full article

The green man is set to stay lit for longer

The green man is set to stay lit for longer

The Department for Transport has updated its regulations to add that the green man, which indicates when it is safe for pedestrians to cross, will remain lit for 20 per cent longer in order to accommodate individuals with slower mobility. Currently, the time has been increased from 6.1 to 7.3 seconds as part of a test programme. The exact modifications, originally proposed by Active Travel England (ATE), will be revealed when the change comes into force in September 2023. ATE CEO Brian Deegan said, “If we don’t give people enough time, they are going to... Read full article

UK government orders a review of low traffic neighbourhoods in England

UK government orders a review of low traffic neighbourhoods in England

The UK government has ordered a review of low traffic neighbourhoods in England as part of the ongoing debate around green policies. The review is in favour of drivers, who ‘use their cars to do all the things that matter to them’. Low traffic neighbourhood schemes aim to reduce traffic in residential areas by preventing motorists from using these streets as cut throughs. This comes after it was announced in July 2023 that the government would stop funding new low traffic neighbourhood schemes in England. However, the government continues to support... Call for evidence on the private parking industry

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has published a call for evidence on its code of practice for the private parking industry, which will be open until September 24 2023. This will form part of the government’s review of parking charges issued for a perceived contravention of the terms and conditions of a private car parking facility. The evidence will be used to: Assess the effectiveness of existing industry limits. Test assumptions made in the draft impact assessment that accompanies this call for evidence. Where relevant, strengthen... Read full article

AA callouts to pothole-damaged vehicles reach the highest level in five years

AA callouts to pothole-damaged vehicles reach the highest level in five years

New data collected by the AA’s Pothole Tracker shows that its patrols attended 46,650 vehicles with pothole-inflicted damage in June 2023 – the highest level in five years. Earlier this year in the Spring Budget 2023, the UK government pledged £200m in funding for road surface repairs. Whilst this has allowed some progress to be made by local authorities in repairing potholes along roads in built-up areas, drivers are continuing to experience what the AA has labelled a ‘rural plague of potholes’ on roads with a lower priority for...
