Concerns over the safety of electric scooter trials are rising in Bristol

In a motion presented ahead of a full council meeting on September 7 2021, Bristol City Councillor for the ward of Frome Vale Lesley Alexander said "[Bristol City] Council is conscious of increasing complaints around road and pedestrian safety, an apparent lack of policing or enforcement, silent scooters being ridden on pavements to create new hazards and nuisance as well as clutter where motors are simply discarded in a haphazard fashion. "In addition, doubts remain over whether e-scooters are as good for the environment as proponents... Read full article

Changes to the HSE Driving at Work policy

Changes to the HSE Driving at Work policy

Changes have been made to the Health and Safety Executive Driving at Work policy mean that businesses using gig economy workers or contractors now have the same responsibility for their drivers and vehicles as any other part of the grey fleet. Chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals, for whom Marshall Leasing’s Sales Director Richard Baird is a board member, Paul Hollick said, “This is potentially impactful. Increasing numbers of vehicles have been operated for businesses outside of usual fleet bounds in recent years, especially as we... Read full article

Shell offers to help local council authorities pay for EV charging points

Energy giant Shell is offering to help local authorities pay for the installation of new electric vehicle (EV) chargers in an effort to improve infrastructure. Shell recently revealed its plans to install 50,000 EV charge points in the UK by 2025, ahead of the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. It will achieve this through Ubitricity, an EV charge point manufacturer and operator which Shell recently acquired.  The government has offered a 75 per cent subsidy to local authorities for the installation of charge points and now Shell... The challenges of driverless technology

The challenges of driverless technology

Associate professor at University College London and author of ‘Who’s Driving Innovation’ Jack Stilgoerecently commented on the unmet driverless car deadlines promised by various car brands. Both Ford and Nissan, for example, were set to release self-driving vehicles in 2020 – a deadline that has since been pushed to 2022.  Jack Stilgoe said, “I think we’re starting to see a correction. “The paradoxical thing is that the earlier a technology is, the more hype there is. The more work people actually... Read full article

Is your vehicle compatible with E10 petrol?

Is your vehicle compatible with E10 petrol?

E10 recently became the new petrol standard, replacing its less eco-friendly predecessor E5 petrol.  The new standard has been introduced in hopes of reducing the overall quantity of fossil fuels from cars on UK roads ahead of the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. Whilst the Department for Transport estimates that 95 per cent of all petrol-powered vehicles currently in the UK will be able to run on E10 and that all cars built since 2011 are compatible, at least 600,000 vehicles will not be compatible.  How to find out if your... Mass electric vehicle uptake could put additional pressure on car parking facilities

Mass electric vehicle uptake could put additional pressure on car parking facilities

A report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has raised concerns about large electric vehicle models putting additional pressure on car parking facilities.  The three best-selling electric and hybrid vehicles of last year – the Tesla Model 3, Kia Niro and Jaguar I-Pace – are all larger than the three best-selling petrol and diesel cars - the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and VW Golf. In addition to an increase in vehicle size (28 per cent since 1965), the Government has offered discounts of up to £2,500 on low-emission... Read full article

British charge points could become as recognisable as the red post box

The Department for Transport (DfT) has appointed the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to create an ‘iconic’ British electric vehicle charging point design, which it hopes will become ‘as recognisable as the red post box’.  It is hoped that a design will be produced and approved for implementation from 2022. Transport secretary Grant Shapps said, “Excellent design plays a key role in supporting our transition to zero emission vehicles, which is why I want to see EV charge points that are...
