Freedom of information request finds 52 per cent of UK councils have not invested in EV charging in 2021

Freedom of information request finds 52 per cent of UK councils have not invested in EV charging in 2021

A freedom of information request, made by service monitoring company DevicePilot, found that 52 per cent of councilsin the UK made no investment in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in 2021 - in some cases having received no funding from the government in order to do so.   The average cost of a council-bought charge point in the UK is £6,000. In light of the findings, DevicePilot suggest that the UK is not ready for universal EV ownership. DevicePilot CEO and co-founder Pilgrim Beart said, “Universal EV... Read full article

British charge points could become as recognisable as the red post box

The Department for Transport (DfT) has appointed the Royal College of Art (RCA) and PA Consulting to create an ‘iconic’ British electric vehicle charging point design, which it hopes will become ‘as recognisable as the red post box’.  It is hoped that a design will be produced and approved for implementation from 2022. Transport secretary Grant Shapps said, “Excellent design plays a key role in supporting our transition to zero emission vehicles, which is why I want to see EV charge points that are... Oxford to open most powerful EV charging hub in Europe

Oxford to open most powerful EV charging hub in Europe

Oxford City Council has joined forces with Pivot Power, Fastned, Tesla Superchargers and EV charging services provider Wenea to create a new electric vehicle (EV) charging hub which, according to Fleet World, is ‘said to be the most powerful in Europe’.  The hub, at Redbridge Park & Ride in Oxford, will host 10MW of power on site for 38 fast and ultra-rapid chargers: 10 Fastned 300kW chargers, 12 Tesla 250kW Supercharges and 16 Wenea 7-22kW charge points. Unlike other sites in the UK,... Read full article

Theives are targeting EV charging cables

Waste removal company Divert have urged company car drivers not to leave the charging cables for their electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles unsecured, as they have become a target for thieves. Divert’s founding director Mark Hall said, “Car chargers are particularly appealing to thieves because they can be sold for up to £200 and they are selling them everywhere, eBay, Facebook, and to dodgy scrap dealers and they can be pretty costly and inconvenient for you to replace, so it’s best to keep it locked away from the... Optimise Prime says cold weather reduces EV range by 40%

Optimise Prime says cold weather reduces EV range by 40%

Recently, we discussed how to maximise EV range in snowy conditions. The question which remains is, how much of an impact does a dropping temperature have on electric vehicles (EVs)? A trial conducted by Optimise Prime has found that EV range can reduce up to 40% in cold conditions.  Optimise Prime is an Ofgem-funded programme which is studying the UK’s electricity infrastructure, to determine how businesses and private owners will cope with transition to EVs, as we approach the 2030 deadline for electrification. It is the largest... Read full article

The Top 3 Benefits of Leasing Over Buying an Electric Car

The Top 3 Benefits of Leasing Over Buying an Electric Car

Today in the UK there are over 55,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, and that’s only counting those purchased with help from the government’s Plug-in Car Grant. The real figure is much larger. And with the recent £40 million fund awarded to Nottingham, Bristol, Milton Keynes, and London to help drive the ‘green car revolution’, thousands more are expected to take to the roads. The fund will be spent on charging infrastructure, improving public knowledge, parking, and other schemes particular to each of the four cities. All this... Read full article

Norway set to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2025

Norway set to phase out petrol and diesel cars by 2025

By 2025, Norway have planned to phase out sales of new petrol and diesel cars by using a tax system called, ‘Polluter Pays’ - designed to incentivise the purchase of low and zero emission vehicles. According to the sustainable transport website Elbil, the Norwegian government have stated that targets to grow sales of low and zero emission vehicles to represent 100% of the new car market were feasible with the right policy measures. The report states that the introduction of a strengthened green tax system would encourage people to opt for clean transport... Read full article

2017: The Year of the Electric Car

2017: The Year of the Electric Car

In an attempt to encourage the uptake of electric cars, in 2017 the government will introduce changes that will make electric cars more affordable, more accessible, and a more attractive proposition than tradition petrol and diesel vehicles. In September, MPs released a report that showed that our uptake of electric cars is way below their expectations. The government’s aim is for 9% of new cars and vans in the UK to be classed as ultra-low emission vehicles (electric cars being classed as ultra-low emission) by 2020. The report shows that current projections only... Read full article

But wait a minute, don’t rush out and buy one just yet. Although there are thousands of happy EV drivers, the majority of... Read full article
