Theives are targeting EV charging cables

Waste removal company Divert have urged company car drivers not to leave the charging cables for their electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles unsecured, as they have become a target for thieves.

Divert’s founding director Mark Hall said, “Car chargers are particularly appealing to thieves because they can be sold for up to £200 and they are selling them everywhere, eBay, Facebook, and to dodgy scrap dealers and they can be pretty costly and inconvenient for you to replace, so it’s best to keep it locked away from the crooks.

“With more people going green and choosing electric cars over petrol and diesel, there are more charging cables available for thieves to target.”

Most electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles have a system in place which locks the charger into position, although in some cases the vehicle must be locked in order for this system to kick-in.

Mark Hall suggests that EV drivers keep their charging cables locked away when not in use and consider locking the charging cable to the vehicle with a padlock when in use. He said, “Most charging cables available for public use are tethered to try and prevent people from making off with them, and you can purchase similar devices to be used at home - because if it’s not bolted down or locked away, someone will try to pinch it.”
