Ultra Low Emissions Parking charges to expand outside of London

Several councils throughout the UK are joining the City of London in enforcing Ultra Low Emissions Parking (ULEP) charges which impact those who drive diesel vehicles or older petrol cars. Drivers of older petrol and diesel cars are being charged more to park. London’s ULEP fees have been in place since 2018 with exempt vehicles paying £5 per hour, diesel and petrol vehicles registered from 2005 paying £7.20 and all other vehicles paying £10 per hour. Worst-polluting vehicles to pay double for parking under new payment structures

Councils throughout the UK are implementing new car parking charges based on vehicle emissions, meaning that those driving the heaviest polluting vehicles could pay double. Several councils in the London area have already implemented these charges, and Lambeth is the latest to do so with 26 different charges for 1 hour of parking. The charge depends on the vehicle’s tax band and diesel surcharge. For example, parking for 1 hour at a bay near Waterloo station can cost between £6.30 and £13.23, depending on the above factors. Almost 700,000 drivers to be affected by the London ULEZ expansion

The Ultra Low Emission Zone in London will expand across the whole of Greater London this summer, and it has been estimated that nearly 700,000 car drivers will be affected. The expansion, taking place on August 29 2023, means that 691,559 cars (and 851,065 vehicles in total) which do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards will be charged a daily fee of £12.50 to drive within the new zone. Proposals to expand the London ULEZ to Kent borders from 2023

A proposed expansion could see London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) reach the borders of Kent and affect the A2, A20 and A21 from next year. Transport for London (TFL) have been asked to consult on expanding the area on August 29, 2023 which is intended to help the Mayor of London fulfil his promise of improving air quality and reducing traffic congestion across Greater London. Manchester CAZ delayed

The government recently granted permission to Manchester authorities to delay the implementation of the Manchester Clean Air Zone following concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on supply chains and the price and availability of second-hand vehicles. Road pricing is an inevitable solution to the motoring tax gap, says the BVRLA

The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), along with representatives from the RAC foundation, the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) have voiced their opinions to the Transport Committee that a new road pricing scheme should be developed urgently in order to achieve a smooth transition from the current emissions-based tax scheme. Oxford will launch its Zero Emission Zone pilot in February 2022

Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council have confirmed that the city will introduce Britain’s first Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ) pilot in February 2022. The registration system for exemptions and discounts, including for businesses and residents in the zone, will go live in December 2021 in preparation for the launch. Ultra-low emission vehicles count for almost 1 in 7 new car sales in 2021

The government has announced that “the UK is at the forefront of the electric revolution as nearly 1 in 7 new car sales so far in 2021 have a plug”. The UK government commits to cutting carbon emissions by 78% 15 years ahead of schedule

The government has made new climate change commitments, based on the advice of its independent Climate Change Committee (CCC) which will enable the UK to cut its carbon emissions by 78% by 2035 – 15 years earlier than planned. Climate law will, for the first time, cover aviation and shipping – likely making it more expensive for frequent fliers. Uber launches new Uber Green service

Uber has launched a new ‘Uber Green’ service, meaning that customers can now, for the first time ever, specifically request a 100% electric taxi from Zone 1 in London.
