Police uncovered 55 illegal ‘chop shops’ which were being used to strip and dismantle stolen cars in 2023.
This number equates to a significant jump of 72 per cent in chop shop ‘busts’, with 80 resulting arrests.
Whilst many of the shops had industrial-sized jammers on site to block GPS signals, those vehicles which were fitted with trackers were still discoverable by police. These vehicles allowed the police to locate the chop shops and recover an additional 164 vehicles which were not fitted with trackers.

Research by consumer car reviews website Parkers found that only 10% of drivers knew that their vehicle has a data sharing agreement in place, and that 86% did not want to share their driving habit data with third parties.

The research team for Drive in a Clean Air Zone is asking for fleets who use telematics systems to take a short survey, in pursuit of their plans for the management of charging Clean Air Zones (CAZs).
The research will be conducted by Informed Solutions on behalf of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department for Transport (DfT) who joined forces to establish the Joint Air Quality Unit.
