The Joint Air Quality Commission Needs Your Help
15 October 2020
The research team for Drive in a Clean Air Zone is asking for fleets who use telematics systems to take a short survey, in pursuit of their plans for the management of charging Clean Air Zones (CAZs).
The research will be conducted by Informed Solutions on behalf of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Department for Transport (DfT) who joined forces to establish the Joint Air Quality Unit.
The survey will not collect personal data. It is primarily focused on helping the researchers understand how telematics systems are currently used in terms of geofencing and notification systems to track vehicles, which could later help with charging CAZs.
According to the government website, ‘The first clean air zones will be launched in Bath, Birmingham, and Leeds in early 2021. More cities will implement clean air zones later in 2021 and 2022’.
As it stands, CAZ restrictions in Bath will be applicable to Class C vehicles, whilst Birmingham City Council has plans to introduce Class D Clean Air Zone.
Cllr Waseem Zaffar, Birmingham City Council’s cabinet member for Transport and the Environment, said, “The Clean Air Zone, which will launch in 2021, focuses on tackling air pollution in the city centre where nitrogen dioxide levels are at their highest but there is more to Birmingham than the inner ring road. This plan will help to identify locations outside the centre to make sure the whole of Birmingham – including its suburbs and residential areas – has safe and legal levels of nitrogen dioxide.”
The government website also hosts a service that allows drivers to check whether they will need to pay a daily charge in a Clean Air Zone, using their vehicle registration.
The government is set to provide £120 million in grants to fund these plans, which will support an estimated 30,000 owners and operations as they replace HGV’s, LGV’s, taxis, private hire vehicles, coaches and minibuses.
