Research finds that 86% of drivers don’t want to share their driving data

Research by consumer car reviews website Parkers found that only 10% of drivers knew that their vehicle has a data sharing agreement in place, and that 86% did not want to share their driving habit data with third parties.

Parkers’ editor Keith Adams said, “It’s true that we’re agreeing to all manner of terms and conditions on a daily basis – I shudder to think what Google knows about me – but it comes as a surprise to see so few drivers are aware of what their cars knows about them. It suggests that carmakers need to make their data gathering more transparent, their agreements easier to read, and most importantly for the 75% of drivers who don’t want it, to opt out of.”

Connected services, generally an internet connection or app, involves an agreement – which the driver must sign and consent to – for driving data to be shared with the manufacturer and specific third parties. Data commonly collected in this instance includes location information (ie where you have been), driver behaviour data (ie how hard you accelerate), personal information (ie when you bought the vehicle) and marketing information (ie when your personal contract purchase agreement ends).

The data collected varies depending on the age of your vehicle and its manufacturer. Often, in return for signing the agreement, drivers can access additional services such as live traffic, internet radio or in-car Wi-Fi.

Some manufacturers now have add-ons which can be bought from inside of the vehicle, which Parkers predicts to become ‘the norm’.

CEO of vehicle data company Verex Mark Aryaeenia told Parkers, “Car companies are thinking far ahead into the future. For instance, an autonomous car has a captive audience. Imagine the e-commerce opportunities it has.”
