Misunderstood low-traffic neighbourhood signage has cost drivers £14 million in fines

Low-traffic neighbourhoods, in which vehicle access is restricted or banned, in London alone have resulted in 250,000 fines worth £14 million for drivers entering the zones in the last year.  There are a total of 200 low-traffic neighbourhoods throughout the UK.  Campaigners are claiming that many drivers don’t understand the signage for these zones and are entering them mistakenly, resulting in a £130 fine.  Low-traffic neighbourhoods in Hackney in east London have collected £2.7 million in fines for drivers passing through... Do you have EV ‘range anxiety’?

Do you have EV ‘range anxiety’?

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is launching a market study to examine the electric vehicle charging sector.  The electric vehicle is quickly growing in popularity and now that the government has brought forward the ban of new petrol and diesel vehicles to 2030, CMA want to ensure that the electric vehicle charging sector can keep up and instil confidence in consumers.  ‘Range anxiety’ is recognised as one of the key reasons people are put off choosing an EV. Range anxiety is the fear over the distance an EV can travel... Read full article

Demand for company vehicles set to increase

Demand for company vehicles set to increase

The Covid-related restrictions imposed throughout 2020 have forced companies across the UK to alter their business models for survival.  In September 2020, after six months of these restrictions, Driving for Better Business carried out two surveys to determine scope of the effects of coronavirus on businesses. One contacted 150 owners of small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) with a turnover of less than £10 million who hire people to drive for work, and the other contacted 152 board-level decision-makers in larger firms.  Whilst there was... Are you confused about the Government’s environmental plans?

Are you confused about the news of the Government’s ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 announced on November 18 2020? Are you worried that this comes into effect in just nine years’ time and it could have a massive impact on your fleet decisions going forward. Please rest assured that you are not alone in being concerned about such momentous decisions, which is just one part of Boris Johnson’s 10-point plan for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The cycling revolution is going electric

The cycling revolution is going electric

According to The Times, electric bike prices could be cut by up to a third under new government plans to offer commuters a “sweat-free” alternative to cycling to work.  Taxpayers are set to back ministers’ new scheme to increase the number of people using electric bikes to commute or those who are older or less fit. Trials for this scheme will begin in the next five months and details of a full-scale programme will be released in spring next year after the outcome of the government’s spending review, which is expected to be concluded at... Fleets are proposing a four-point plan to fast-track action on air pollution

A group of fleets including DPD and Lime have banded together to call upon the UK government to fast-track action on reducing air pollution from vehicles, following the announcement of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution.  The group has partnered with the environmental law charity ClientEarth and written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak outlining a four-point plan with the view to ‘deliver a resilient economy and benefit the planet and people’s health’ and provide a... Navigating the classification of journeys

Navigating the classification of journeys

It has been widely reported by fleet managers and the prestigious organisation, the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP), that the classification of journeys by employees is causing a headache.    This has arisen in light of the push for people to work from home and the increase in the number of people who are perceiving their place of work as being home.  The AFP chairman Paul Hollick recently said, “If someone is working from home rather than the office, then it raises the question of which is actually their place of work. This is... Read full article

Government plans to close loophole in legislation

Government plans to close loophole in legislation

Roads Minister Baroness Vere has announced government plans to close the loophole in legislation surrounding the use of a mobile phone whilst driving.  The Department for Transport released this news on the government website on October 17 2020. The rules around using a mobile phone whilst driving are notoriously unclear. The BBC reported that a recent survey by the RAC revealed almost one in 10 drivers aged 17-24 say they play games on their phones while driving. As it stands, the law says that you can’t call or text whilst driving, but it has become... Read full article

London Council Tackles Rat Running

London Council Tackles Rat Running

Hammersmith and Fulham Council in London has introduced a ‘Low Traffic Neighbourhoods’ scheme in the hope of reducing ‘rat running’ through small, residential roads. This scheme was trialled on three streets earlier in the year and is now in full force, with £130 fines for motorists passing through without a permit purchased in advanced by a resident. These fines may be reduced to £65 if paid within 28 days. The council is using a camera-enforced Automatic Number Plate Recognition system to catch offenders on Harwood Terrace,... Read full article

State of the Art Gritters to Treat Roads at up to 50MPH

Highways England has announced that it will be deploying 93 ‘state of the art’ gritters to patrol the 4,400 miles of motorways and major A roads across the UK as we approach winter.  These gritters can treat the roads at speeds up to 50MPH, 10MPH faster than previous models.   These ninety-three are a handful of the 535 gritters that Highways England has available, all of which have had a summer service. Highways England have said that these new models will improve safety for the workers operating the gritters with improved technology... Read full article
