New Gas Refuelling Station Opened by Ocado

​If you own a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) as part of your fleet, you’ll understand the issues with refuelling this big machine, as these can be hard to come by. As technology and efficiency are always on the rise, fear not as the online supermarket brand Ocado has recently opened its first natural gas refuelling station, located at its Hatfield Customer Fulfilment Centre.

The company are the first of its kind in the UK to self-fund the purchase of an onsite grid connected station, allowing the facility to accommodate up to 80 vehicles. This site was both built and designed by Gasrec, a major fuel supplier for the natural-gas powered HGV industry on UK roads. There are considerable environmental benefits of switching to natural gas, including 99% fewer particulate emissions and 70% less nitrogen oxide than the most up-to-date diesel equivalent. These vehicles are also on average 50% quieter than normal diesel-powered vehicles, allowing these to be driven in residential and rural areas without disturbances.

Ocado and Gasrec have agreed a 10-year support and maintenance contract, with Ocado announcing plans to invest in natural gas technology in future sites. The large investment in natural gas is being explored on a wide level, as businesses and individuals are looking to explore and invest in carbon-friendly alternatives to the traditional diesel fuel, with some companies looking at electric and hybrid engines for delivery vehicles.
