City Leaders Calling to Funding Clean Air Zones
14 October 2019
Reducing emission levels has always been a key topic for many large decision makers across the world, although the plan to save the planet may be sped up with the introduction of new systems. Recent reports have stated that a cross-party group consisting of 14 political leaders across the UK are calling for Government support to tackle air pollution by funding and maintaining 30 new and existing Clean Air Zones (CAZs).
This information comes off the back of a released report by UK100, which shows a network of local leaders who pledged to shift to 100% clean energy by 2050. This could see towns and cities across the UK gain an economic return of £6.5 billion with support from the Government directly, in order to tackle illegal levels of air pollution.
At present, air pollution is estimated to contribute up to 36,000 deaths a year, and research conducted by the Royal College of Physicians estimates the costs associated with health problems resulting from exposure to air pollution and other dangerous substances totals more than £20 billion per year for the UK.
