ULEZ Zones Proving a Success in London

Research from the Mayor of London’s office has revealed that the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London has proven to be a success. The two key areas where it has been effective is in reducing the number of cars in the zone and cutting toxic air pollution. Could this new charging system be the way forward for cities?

The figures showed that in the first six months 13,500 fewer cars drove into central London every day which resulted in a 36% fall of roadside nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution. For a project that was a ‘world’s first’ this is significant progress.

However, despite progress being made towards a cleaner air London, many motorists have found themselves being unfairly charged. Research carried out by Money Saving Expert found that 18,927 penalty charges have had to be overturned due to errors in the system, with a further 9,556 appeals still under investigation.
