The Impact of Christmas on our Roads

The Impact of Christmas on our Roads

‘Tis the season for your Christmas parties at work to bring the team together and celebrate the festive season. For those of you hosting your festivities at venues afar, there is one thing to consider above all, the safety of your employees.

Alcohol will most likely feature at the party but for those driving in potentially hazardous conditions, it can be a recipe for disaster. How do you keep your employees safe without becoming the grinch at Christmas?

According to research by the RAC, 19% of motorists admit to driving whilst over the drink-drive limit in the past 12 months. This equates to more than seven million individuals which has a big impact on the safety of our roads.  Looking at the latest statistics available, the Department of Transport revealed 8,600 people were killed or injured as a result of an accident where at least one driver was over the alcohol limit.

Back to the question at hand. No, you don’t have to bring back prohibition just for your Christmas party. There are plenty of ways to prioritise safety with alcohol present. Here are just a few tips to do just that.

Firstly, for the non-tea totals, offer to cover the costs of alternative methods of transport to save them from having to use their company cars. Secondly, only offer wine and beer and no spirits and be sure that no one drinks on an empty stomach. Finally, make sure alcohol isn’t the only focus of the party by providing plenty of entertainment and activities for employees.
