New Data Standards to Make Parking Easier

New Data Standards to Make Parking Easier

As lovers of our vehicles, it can often be difficult to get to grips with changing road conditions in different towns and cities across the UK. A bane of our lives is parking, and there’s no worse sight than seeing full car park after full car park and panicking where to look next. To combat this issue, new national parking standards have been released in recent weeks, meaning that traditional payment methods such as machines could become a thing of the past.

By introducing new standards, the Government’s aim is for all parking data released by local councils and businesses across the country to speak the same language, supporting the development of apps to making parking easier for drivers. The standardised data has been created by the Alliance for Parking Data Standards (APDS) through funding from the Department for Transport (DfT), and this could lead to smoother and easier payment methods when parking. This scheme has been compared in recent weeks to the Oyster card transformation for those travelling in and around London.

Helping streamline the parking experience for drivers across the country, this could free up crucial parking spaces, ease congestion in major cities and encourage people to visit the brilliant and traditional British high street. To further support this scheme, four research and development projects organised by Manchester City Council, Oxfordshire County Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and a consortium of South Essex Councils, will receive a combined share of £1million to start putting the Alliance for Parking Data Standards (APDS) into practice. There are a supposed further seven projects currently being commissioned to identify ways to open local authority data.
