London Heathrow to Introduce Ultra-Low Emission Zone from 2022
01 July 2019
Airports are known for one of two things, a gateway for a much-needed holiday away in the sun or the source of many traffic jams. If you’re a glass half-full type of character, we pray you try and stay that way following recent news reports. London Heathrow Airport is currently proposing to implement an Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) on their premisis to target older, more polluting passenger cars and hire vehicles from 2022.
To make matters even more confusing for drivers across the country, there are plans to extend a wider access charge which would be introduced for all passenger cars, taxis and hire vehicles entering the airport, in line with Heathrow opening their brand new runway. These charges will help fund new measures with a means to improve sustainable transport modes at the airport, as well as public transport access. This has been proposed as part of Heathrow’s expansion plans for the future.
With the introduction of the Heathrow ULEZ, this will introduce minimum vehicle emissions standards which are identical to that of London’s ULEZ for passenger cars and hire vehicles which enter car parks or drop-off areas. This will apply at any of Heathrow’s terminals, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
The plan is that over time, with the opening of the new runway from 2026 and improvements to overall public transport access to the airport, the Heathrow ULEZ will transition into a Vehicle Access Charge (VAC) on all passenger cars, taxis and hire vehicles. The main goal of this outlined plan – to tackle the main source of local air pollution, road vehicles and reduce congestion by encouraging more people to use sustainable transportation methods allowing them to arrive and leave from the airport smoothly.
