Car-Free London for a Day

Car-Free London for a Day

Imagine a world where traffic didn’t exist, sounds like bliss right? On Sunday September 22nd 2019, as announced by the Mayor of London, up to 12 miles of streets in the capital will close to most traffic for the day. Areas affected include Tower Bridge (all traffic closed), London Bridge (buses only) and a large proportion of the city.

Across the capital, eighteen boroughs are also organising events including working with local residents to create ‘Play Streets’, classed as safe spaces where children can play and communities can come together. Sadiq Khan has named these car-free events ‘Reimagine’, which gives Londoners and visitors of the city the chance to reimagine their city vehicle-free. This enables then to get out and about freely, enjoy numerous events across the capital’s streets and relax.

There will be an estimated 150,000 Londoners who will participate in London’s Reimagine events which will encourage the change in behaviour needed for traffic across the capital. The Mayor’s ambitious target of 80% of all journeys to be taken via sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transport are to be in place by 2041, when compared with 63% today.

At Marshall Leasing, we are keen on encouraging communities to come together, even if it means we have to put our beloved vehicles to one side for a day. It’s important to keep strong relationships with individuals, which is what our business strives to do. We’re at hand to help with all fleet requirements, no matter how complex or simple.
