Driving Home the Issue of Stress

Driving Home the Issue of Stress

We all have our frustrating moments behind the wheel but do some people go too far? The RAC found that 36% of motorists are most concerned about some form of illegal, anti-social or dangerous behaviour on the part of other drivers. They suggest that these levels of irresponsible actions are the highest they have ever been. If the standards are getting worse can we change the way we drive to make us and others safer?

Firstly, what’s causing motorists to be concerned about other road users? In the RAC research, 30% of drivers said they had witnessed physical abuse on the roads over the past twelve months. Furthermore, almost 25% confessed to making or receiving calls on a handheld phone whilst driving. Finally, 20% of drivers think they’ve driven while over the limit in the past year.

All of this equates to a significant proportion of motorists jeopardising the safety of themselves and others on the roads. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Confused.com found almost one in five British drivers experience stress because of driving which can add to any potential road rage.

At Marshall Leasing we have put together our top tips to staying calm at the wheel. Being late can be very frustrating but rather than taking your anger out on “slower” drivers, leave earlier to allow for any potential delays. Don’t get 'hangry' by becoming angry on an empty stomach. Having a snack like a piece of fruit or a cereal bar can calm your mind and settle your stomach. Be aware of how your driving affects others. Putting pressure on another driver by tailgating for example, greatly increases the risks of an accident. Finally, use your horn only when necessary. Improper use when stuck in traffic for example, can be another way to impose stress on other drivers.

In the unfortunate event one of your fleet has been involved in a scrape, at Marshall Leasing we are here to help. Our telematics software “Marshall Matics” provides early notification of any accident which provides fleet operators with the opportunity to instantly check on the wellbeing of drivers and seek immediate recourse.
